dual boot mac/windows

Post by [JiF]EA »

Hey guys, I currently have a brand new macbook on my hands, and I want to dual boot is with xp (or vista), so I can still play PC games. Does anyone know anything about this, and any tips you might have. Also does anyone know where I can get my hands on a copy of xp or vista, I'm a broke college student, and had to pull together some loans to get this laptop, so I can't relly afford to purchase a brand new OS.

Thanks,

Kyle

Sorry don't have a spare OS but here is what you need to dual boot. It's in beta but is very stable also if there are other applications that you need to run under windows but don't want to leave the mac OS you can run one of these as well.

http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/

http://www.parallels.com/en/products/desktop/
http://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/

The last two would not let you run games but I thought you may want to look at them for other things.

Installation was a success, I am currently posting this message via windows xp on my macbook. Apple makes it VERY easy to install using bootcamp. I am about to install drivers, directx, than half-life 2. I pre-ordered TF2 today to get my 5 dollars off at gamestop, so I should be seeing you guys online very soon.

Finally got HL2 installed today, and it is running flawlessly on the mac. The mac only has a onboard video card, but it's shared, and the processor on this thing kicks, and since it's a mac and it runs so smoothly, it can actually run games on xp very well. I don't plan to install anything on the xp partition except for games, and maybe music, because there's no real reason to. Dual-booting a mac seems to be a very good idea thus far.

Thanks for those Jimbo, I didn't even know there were programs out there that could sync the two operating systems together. I think that when I get the money I am going to buy the Fusion program. It will make everything a lot easier.

Just keep in mind that most games will not be playable under Windows on VMware Fusion or Parallels. They have some support for DirectX 8, but it's pretty slow... especially on the Macbook.

My gaming PC officially died about a month ago and last thursday my wife's PC went off and joined it. I think it was sad, lonely, and just lost the will to live, but it could have been the motherboard too. Anyway, I purchased a 24" iMac and all I can say is DAMN! Easily the best computer I have ever touched, this thing is truly amazing. Last night I created a BootCamp partition and I'll probably install XP tonight or tomorrow. I'll follow that up by picking up TF2 very shortly. I'm excited to get back to gaming.

Windows is installed and running beautifully. I'm installing BF1942 now and will see how that goes. From there I'll throw on BF2 and check that out as well. Eventually, I'll work my way up to buying TF2. I've heard it runs well.

Downloading TF2 now. It is actually going pretty quickly. Of course I've never played any form of TF and I can't wait to get my butt handed to me.
