Lake Michigan Aircraft Carriers

Post by [JiF]major confusion »

I live in Grand Rapids, Michigan and am only about 20 minutes from the lake.

I just learned we had two aircraft carriers operating in Lake Michigan during WW-II. It was an ideal place for new pilots and Carrier crew members to practice operations from a carrier. They didn't have to worry about being sunk by the subs that patrolled just off both of our coasts.
Both ships were converted from side-wheeler cruise ships operating in the Great lakes at the time. They were converted in less than two months! They didn't have elevators or hanger storage below so pilots started and ended each day at land bases.

Pretty Cool!
