John McDermott does a nice version of this song too, but I think I like this one better. Has a bit more grit to it. Thanks so much for posting.

Hey Tissue,
When I was a teenager (back when Angela Lansbury was still a sex symbol) we would hang out in the pubs and sing Irish folk songs, mostly protest songs. Listening to protest songs made you seem "deep" to the girls, of course so did owning your own car. To a young girl "Deep" is a relative term - the more money you have the "Deeper" was the desire to make you a "relative". Years latter, when I was no longer busy pretending to understand the music, I actually found out what some of the songs meant. Wow.

This was a favorite - each band sang this song with a different set of lyrics. Some lyrics more daring then others, check it out on Wiki and you'll see what I mean.

Just for fun we would dare each other to sing "Rocky Road to Dublin" as fast as humanly possible. Oddly enough this was one of the few times the guy accepting the bet would be more sober then the guys they were betting. Of course, if you were drunk enough to try to sing this song in front of a crowd you were usually drunk enough to do it while stripping. Strange as it might seem, being drunk helped increase your chances of success.

Only a drunk teenager would think it was a good idea to try to win a drop of the pure by singing this:

The evening always ended with the singing of "Barrett's Privateers" by Stan Rogers. Funny thing is that this is not an Irish folk song or a protest song but rather sea shanty written in 1976 by a guy from Ontario (a maggoty main-lander - in the local tongue). Great tune - with lots a spots for audience participation. I believe this version has Ryan's Fancy singing backup.

Enjoy!!

Badger,

My dad's family hails from County Cork so I've always had an interest in Irish folk music. I've heard the Patriot Game before. I think I need to drink a pint in order to be able to listen fast enough for The Rocky Road to Dublin. Barrett's Privateers is a great song. I can just see a bunch of young, drunken Canadians trying to impress the women with their singing prowess on that song. Ah to be young again. But then again, I wake up without those irritating headaches these days.

Enough with the tracks glorifying a terrorist organisation that has killed many innocent civilians please!
If you were British you might find this offensive

Good point, Gav. From our side of the pond it is rather abstract. My ancestry includes English, Irish and French-Canadian roots. My father's family came to the US because one of my Irish Catholic ancestors married an English Protestant. Too many problems staying in Ireland. My mother's family came to the US to find work. How about:

I liked that "Kilkelly" tune. Nice guitar & voice. A bit depressing though.

We went & saw the RX Bandits last month. they played a couple of anti-war tunes back to back.
