I counted seventeen squirrels in the yard at one time. The previous record was thirteen.
Here are some of them in the front yard. I go thru about 50lbs of sunflower seed a month.

I once made the mistake of sitting on my back porch with peanuts for about 2 hrs coaxing a pigeon to take it from my hand. Then over the following weeks he brought 2 friends and they brought 2 friends and so on and so on..... so after a few weeks my back porch was covered in bird crap! Took a long time for them to finally stop coming.

Moral of the story : Animals like to crap on your porch!!

Have you thought of growing your sunflowers in pots under cover first instead of continuing to scatter the seed all winter like that. Seems a bit of a hit & miss method to me. I'm sure one small packet would be enough using my method!
