Re: Armistice Day
In the US it is Veteran's Day now. (we have a separate day in May (Memorial Day) to commemorate those that died in war)
Originally, it was armistice day to commemorate the end of WW I (The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month)
The WW I armistice was signed at 5:00AM to go into effect at 11:00AM.
Thousands of soldiers on both sides died during those 6 hours. Some, due to generals ordering unnecessary attacks.
BTW, there is an excellent series on the Military Channel about WW I

Re: Armistice Day
=sigh=
It's remembrance day here too. Each year the local veterans parade down the main street led by the Legions pipe band. The parade gets smaller each year and soon the pipers will out number the marchers. Out of respect, as we do each year, myself and the staff stand silently by the front of the store and watch the 2 minute parade pass.
This year while we watched the parade someone stole the large charity box off the counter and made off with over two hundred dollars that we had raised for the Christmas Toy Drive. Jerk.
