The little light on my CD-RW flashes all the time. I suppose this isn't a good sign, but the drive still seems to work -- for reading anyway. I haven't tried burning anything with it so I don't know if that works. Words of elightenment are appreciated.

Badger is probably correct but you may try this:
I think the drive light blinking is caused by CD polling. Try turning off Automatic-Insert Notification and/or disable AutoPlay for the CD drive.
