These are the ghosts of soldiers that you have killed. When you're playing alone on a cold dark night it's best to keep your distance from the apparitions because they can unleash frightening powers, the likes of which even Gib steers clear of. Some even believe that these ghosts can manifest themselves outside of your screen, and when you're lying in bed at the witching hour, you can hear voices around you, faintly calling "I'll attack!" and "I have a target for artillery".
I advise you consult a professional excorcist.
I know for certain that the JiF server is haunted. I made a post a while ago about these experiences:

1a: Battle of the bulge - I'm in blue team. Running towards bridge from the church. On the minimap I see a friendly blue tank yards in front of me.
On the screen I cannot see ANY tank. Watching my minimap, I run around, through, over, under this tank, Can hear it's engines, really loud, but it's completely invisible. It's not solid, because I'm running right through it, according to my minimap. It eventually accelerates over the bridge and I lose sight of it on the minimap.
1b: Another time on The Bulge, also blue team, I'm about to steal a tank from Red main base, when I hear a whole bunch of tanks closing in on me. I assume they're enemy, because nothings showing on the minimap. I run around buildings trying to catch a glimpse and hide. I turn 360 but no tanks in sight. The engines are so loud they must be on top of me but I can see NOTHING! I'm just waiting for one of them to run me down. Got bored eventually, waiting to die, so I just ran away.
