If you head here http://www.microsoft.com/student/discounts/theultimatesteal-us/default.aspx you can get 7 Pro for $65. I grabbed it a while back when it was offered for around $30. Only trick is you need an .edu email address to qualify, but I've seen others have success with @alumni.edu addresses from college.

I'm running Ultimate 32
The machine I bought was basically a home entertainment laptop with good graphics etc. that had Home Premium 64, but I wanted to be able to join a domain at work, so got a different version.
Home Premium is not capable of joining a work domain

If you can swing it just go with Ultimate 64 and you won't be disappointed. I have both 32 and 64 versions of Ultimate and like the 64 better.

I've just installed Windows 7 Home Premuim 64 bit onto my oldish Dell Vostro 1700.

That coupled with an Intel X25 Solid state drive makes this old crock fly. Definitely the way to go.

However if you work for a company that has domains then Ultimate 64 would be better.

I have Win7 Ultimate 64.

I believe the hope is that I can run more than 4GB of memory, but in all honesty I felt it was time to move to 64-bit so that things would be that much easier to upgrade and run smoother. I miss the days when I had a Digital (DEC) Alpha Workstation. Course back then you had backwards computing, and things ran smoother, but it was also not for what we do today in terms of gaming.

But I have had no problems with Ultimate, other than the lack of some drivers. What was amazing to me was that when you needed a driver, and you clicked "have windows look on the internet for it" normally in old versions it couldn't find a thing, but this time it worked. And more than once too. I found the correct printer driver, video, and 1 other thing. I was so surprised. I always found it never worked to do that, and you had to go to download.com or the products website to find the software. Oh I remember I installed an older sound card, I couldn't find the software on Creative or Soundblaster.com, but Windows found and installed the correct driver. Go figure, they may have a winner here, albeit I do miss the sounds in BF Vietnam, and the game play of BF1942 which doesn't work in Win 7.

General

Is your machine capable of virtualisation?
If so you can create an XP virtual machine on your computer. Can then run XP programs in W7.
I have 1942 running in W7. Have to make sure you tweek the settings in the properties of the program file. Run in XP SP3 compatability mode & run as administrator.
Good luck

I put Windows 7 on my PC and had nothing but probs with Punk Buster apparently it thinks that windows 7 is a hack and I kept getting kicked. Which meant I had to reformat and go back to XP. Now I see you fellas are running the game on Win7 so how did you get around this problem? or didn't you get this problem.

I never got the PB problem but I update it every time I play so I don't have any problems with it. So far I haven't a single game, program or driver that has given me any problems yet.

Must admit I have had no problems with PB either.
Good thing about W7, everything seems to just work (well most of the time if you remember to run everything as admin).
